Freemasonry or masonry includes fraternal organizations that spot their origins to the local fraternities belonging from the end of the 14th century who directed the qualification of freemasons and their sociability with different clients and authorities. 1. Subjects like religion and politics are not the topic of discussion when freemasons meet.

Generally, on meeting, a freemason tends to NOT talk about the two sensitive topics: religion and politics. Even if they do, the forms of politics or events are discussed. Yet, it is known that they proscribe from putting forward and talking about these subjects within the lodge. 

2. The Catholic Church declared freemasonry reprehensive.

Especially in continental Europe, the men of freemasonry were perceived with suspicion. They considered them people belonging to different neighborhoods, professions, performing rituals. In 1738, the Catholic Church disapproved of the Freemasonry issuing 20 decrees against it. 

3. Prohibition of Atheists

Freemasonry is an organization of believers that started formally in 1717. It’s a place where agnostics and atheists cannot be a part of. Initially, several historians believed that freemasonry attempted to bridge the gap between religion-based wars that were running in England during the time. The group of freemasons agreed that their lives revolved around God ( God being central) and direct them to do good deeds in the community. This was the concept of the time. So, atheists weren’t allowed to indulge since a freemason is said to believe in the supreme being. 

4. It is not a religion.

The concept of freemasonry looks equal to religion but it is a bit twisted in the sense that their ritual elements do not have priests, ministers, rabbis, and there’s no system of the clergy. A freemason is said to be their thinkers and believers. 

With time, every aspect has progressed, and now a masonic lodge can be categorized into three degrees- Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft, and Master Mason- third being the highest degree. Few additional degrees are offered only to those who are master masons.
